Medium Kinky Twists Aftercare: First 48 Hours & 2-Week Plan image

If you just got medium kinky twists, the single most important rule for the first 48 hours is simple: keep your twists as untouched and dry as you reasonably can so the set holds and the roots stay neat. I install medium kinky twists as classic two-strand twists with kinky hair extensions, and that “fresh” look depends on letting everything settle before you start pulling, washing, or piling your hair into tight styles.

I’m writing this for my Los Angeles clients who want straight answers. This is the same aftercare I coach in the chair, especially for people commuting through Pico-Robertson and the La Cienega corridor who need a routine that takes 10 minutes, not an hour.

First 24–48 hours: stop the slip, save the parts

The first two days are where most “my twists got fuzzy fast” problems start. In general, I recommend you treat new medium kinky twists like fresh stitching. They need time to hold their shape at the root.

48-hour rule: No washing, no soaking, no heavy sweating if you can avoid it. And skip tight buns and high ponytails.

What I want you doing instead

  • Keep your hands out of your hair. Twisting and retwisting individual pieces is how frizz starts early.
  • If your scalp feels dry or tight, mist lightly with water-based braid spray. Keep it light. The goal is comfort, not saturation.
  • If you have to shower, keep the twists out of the steam and away from the spray. A shower cap helps, even at home.

Night routine that actually works in real life

Do this for the first two nights minimum, and honestly, it’s the routine that keeps twists looking “new” the longest:

  • A satin bonnet or scarf, plus a silk or satin pillowcase as backup.
  • Gather twists into a loose pineapple or low, loose bun. No tight elastics, especially around your edges.
  • If you’re in LA and running warm at night, keep your scalp comfortable but don’t drench it with product. Less buildup, cleaner parts.

Days 3–7: wash smart, don’t over-moisturize the roots

Once you’re past 48 hours, you can start gently cleansing your scalp. The key word is gently. A lot of people hear “protective style” and then ignore their scalp for weeks. That’s when itch, buildup, and dull-looking twists show up.

My go-to wash method for medium kinky twists

  1. Dilute a sulfate-free shampoo with water in an applicator bottle.
  2. Apply to your scalp in sections, then massage with the pads of your fingers. No nails.
  3. Rinse thoroughly. Most buildup problems come from not rinsing all the way through the parts.
  4. Squeeze excess water out with a towel. Don’t rub the twists like a washcloth.

How often should you wash? Most people do best on a 7–14 day rhythm. If you’re working out a lot or you’re in and out of traffic and heat around Los Angeles, you’ll usually be closer to 7 days.

Workouts and sweat

I recommend waiting at least 48 hours before a heavy workout. If you do sweat, blot your scalp, let it fully dry, and use a light braid spray after. Don’t pile on heavy creams at the roots. In LA’s warm, dry climate, heavy product tends to sit on the scalp and collect lint fast.

A simple 2-week plan (that works for busy LA schedules)

If your calendar is packed and you’re bouncing between West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Culver City, Hollywood, Inglewood, or Koreatown, you need something you can follow on autopilot. Here’s the rhythm I like for medium kinky twists, and it also applies if you wear small kinky twist hairstyles and want that crisp, clean look to last.

Days 1–2

Dry scalp care only. Satin protection at night. No tight styles. Keep your hands off the twists.

Days 3–7

If needed, do your first gentle scalp cleanse. Moisturize lightly. Keep edge styles loose and low-tension.

Week 2

Repeat a gentle wash if you’re on a weekly schedule, or stretch to day 10–14 if your scalp stays calm. Refresh with braid spray, then seal sparingly with a light oil.

If you’re comparing sizes like large kinky twists versus smaller twists, the aftercare is similar, but smaller twists usually show lint and buildup faster. Clean scalp, light product, and satin protection matter even more.

Frizz control, parting, and edges: the details people notice

A lot of my clients tell me the compliments start immediately after they leave. That “very neat and well done” look comes down to small habits. And yes, it matters for kinky twist short hair styles too, because frizz can show faster on shorter lengths.

To prevent frizz and keep the parting crisp

  • Use satin every night. This is non-negotiable if you want your parts to stay visible.
  • Choose low-tension styles. Tight up-dos pull at the root, and that’s where fuzz starts first.
  • Skip heavy butters at the scalp. They usually cause buildup that makes parts look dull and “filled in.”
  • If you need a quick refresh, smooth lightly with a little water-based spray, then tie a scarf for 10 minutes while you get ready.

Edge safety (so your twists don’t cost you hair)

Medium kinky twists should protect your hair, not punish it. Keep tension low around the hairline, rotate where you part or pull your hair back, and don’t glue your edges down every day. If something feels too tight, pay attention early. That’s how you prevent breakage.

Swimming, touch-ups, and when I want you to text me

You can swim with medium kinky twists, but be intentional. Chlorine and salt can dry out both your scalp and the extension hair. Use a swim cap if you can, rinse as soon as you’re done, and follow with a gentle cleanse sooner than your usual schedule if your scalp feels coated.

Reach out if: you feel persistent tightness after the first day, you see bumps that aren’t calming down, you notice slipping at the hairline, or your scalp itch is getting worse instead of better.

I take feedback seriously. One client put it plainly after a redo: “I went back and Fama re did my hair after I expressed disappointment very satisfied with the re do thank you!” That’s the energy I keep. If something is off, I’d rather you tell me early so I can help you protect your style and your hair.

“I LOVE MY TWIST! AS SOON AS I WALKED OUT THE SHOP I GOT SO MANY COMPLIMENTS!! VERY NEAT AND WELL DONE!”

If you’re planning ahead, I also wrote a guide on how long medium kinky twists last. It’ll help you plan maintenance around work, travel, and those last-minute LA weekends.

Need a quick check-in or touch-up timing? I’m happy to guide you, especially if you’re commuting through Pico-Robertson and want an evening or weekend plan that keeps your twists neat between visits.
